Assumptions: receiving parent € 30,000 gross per year, children aged 10, registered with the receiving parent, care discount 25% (regular contact arrangement, about 104 days a year with the paying parent). Amounts rounded to € 5 and expressly indicative.

Why the amount for three children at a lower income is lower than for two

Between € 30,000 and € 60,000 the amount for three children is lower than for two. That is not a calculation error in this table, but a consequence of the method itself.

The children's need does rise with each child — the needs table always increases. In this income band, however, that need is simply greater than what both parents together can afford. A separate rule from the Rapport Alimentatienormen then applies: where there is a capacity shortfall, that shortfall is split equally between both parents, and half of it is deducted from the paying parent's care discount. He then pays not a share of the need, but his full capacity, less that reduced care discount.

In that formula his capacity does not depend on the number of children. An extra child therefore changes only two items, and they move unequally. The care discount is a percentage of the table amount and rises with the need; at € 40,000 it goes from € 307 to € 341. Half of the shortfall rises less, from € 140 to € 155. On balance the deduction grows faster than the room, and the contribution falls — from € 255 to € 235. That is not a flaw but the flip side of the care discount itself: a parent who has three children at home 104 nights a year bears a larger share of the costs in kind and therefore pays less in money.

The child-related budget plays a part in this, but indirectly. It rises by well over € 215 per child per month and, since the Dutch Supreme Court's ruling of 9 October 2015 (ECLI:NL:HR:2015:3011), is not deducted from the need but added to the capacity of the parent who receives it. As a result her capacity rises too, and the shortfall is smaller than it would otherwise be.

Above roughly € 60,000 the effect disappears, precisely at the point where the capacity shortfall reaches zero. From there the ordinary formula applies — the payer's share of the need, less the full care discount — and three children are again above two. At € 75,000 that is € 665 against € 655.

This is the outcome of the model under the fixed assumptions above. In an actual case, incomes, ages, housing costs and the care arrangement shift this picture; the court always looks at the real situation.

Methodology

The amounts are model-based indications, calculated with the same method the Alimentatie Inzicht calculator uses, following the steps of the Dutch Trema guidelines 2026:

  • Need: the parents' own share of the costs of the children, based on the joint net disposable income (needs table).
  • Capacity: the capacity of both parents under the capacity formula.
  • Care discount: 25% (regular contact arrangement, about 104 days a year with the paying parent).
  • Fixed assumptions: receiving parent € 30,000 gross per year, children aged 10, registered with the receiving parent; child-related budget included.

The calculation core has been checked against one reference calculation from a professional 2026 maintenance report: for the reference case (payer € 130,000, recipient € 36,697, 1 child) it calculates an own share of the costs of the children of € 1,175 per month, equal to that report. This check covers the needs step; capacity and the care discount have not been tested separately. The method follows the Rapport Alimentatienormen 2026 (Trema guidelines) of the Expertgroep Alimentatienormen, rechtspraak.nl. That report is a guideline for the courts, not law.

Why your own amount may differ

This table assumes a fixed scenario. Your actual child maintenance depends on the exact income of both parents, the age and number of children, the care discount (how care is shared), housing costs and any debts. So calculate your own situation with the child maintenance calculator.
