When should you contact the LBIO?

Engaging the LBIO (Landelijk Bureau Inning Onderhoudsbijdragen, the Dutch national maintenance collection agency) is a step you take when payments persistently fail to arrive. Find out how to recognise the right moment, which steps to take yourself first and when a recalculation is the wiser option.

Want to know what the amount should be first? Work it out free of charge — under the Dutch Trema guidelines for 2026, with a free account.

Recognise the right moment

Consider the LBIO when all of the following apply:

  • Persistent non-payment — the payer does not pay, pays late or pays only part of the amount.
  • Established amount — there is a court order or official agreement.
  • Recent arrears — there are arrears no older than six months.
  • Your own reminders fail — demands produce no payment.

Steps you take yourself first

  • Send a demand — send the payer a written reminder with a payment deadline.
  • Build a file — record dates, amounts and keep payment records.
  • Check the amount — does the established amount still match the current situation?

Recalculate first or collect right away?

If circumstances have changed — for example a different income, a new partner or a change in the care arrangement — it can be wise to first recalculate the maintenance. Adjustment may be in order. Is the amount still correct and does payment still fail? Then the LBIO is the logical route. Also read can the LBIO collect my maintenance? Please note: a recalculation at Alimentatie Inzicht is an indication only and does not change the established amount. That requires a new agreement confirmed by the court, or a new court order. The LBIO always collects the officially established amount; Alimentatie Inzicht is not affiliated with the LBIO.
