The LBIO and maintenance, explained

Is your maintenance not being paid, or not in full? The LBIO (Landelijk Bureau Inning Onderhoudsbijdragen, the Dutch national maintenance collection agency) can help with collection. In this article we explain what the LBIO is, what it does and what it costs.

Want to know what the amount should be first? Work it out free of charge — under the Dutch Trema guidelines for 2026, with a free account.

What is the LBIO?

LBIO stands for Landelijk Bureau Inning Onderhoudsbijdragen — the Dutch national maintenance collection agency. It is a Dutch government body that can collect maintenance on behalf of the receiving parent or ex-partner when payment is not made. It works on the basis of a Dutch court order or an official agreement that is enforceable in the Netherlands.

The LBIO does not determine the amount of maintenance — that follows from a court ruling or an official agreement. The LBIO only ensures the established amount is actually paid.

What exactly does the LBIO do?

  • Take over collection — if the payer does not pay or pays late, the LBIO takes over collection.
  • Collect arrears — the LBIO claims both the current instalments and the accumulated arrears.
  • Enforcement — if needed through attachment of earnings (wage garnishment) or seizure of other income.
  • Recover costs — surcharge costs are borne by the non-paying party.

What does the LBIO cost?

For the recipient, collection is free of charge. The payer who has defaulted pays, on top of the arrears, a surcharge of 15 % on the amounts collected — both the arrears and the ongoing contributions — with a minimum of € 19. The LBIO first gives the payer the chance to pay voluntarily; only if that fails does the LBIO take over collection and does the surcharge apply. This makes paying late considerably more expensive.

Want to know first whether the established amount still matches your current situation? Make a free recalculation — if your circumstances have changed, an adjustment may be possible. Please note: a recalculation at Alimentatie Inzicht is an indication only and does not change the established amount. That requires a new agreement confirmed by the court, or a new court order. The LBIO always collects the officially established amount; Alimentatie Inzicht is not affiliated with the LBIO.
